To help with that, we want to train you in spiritual practices and to learn to engage in God's Word. Sunday worship is the space where invites are easy, opportunities to serve are plentiful, and where multiple small groups come together as one. These groups are about doing life together **WITH** Jesus in the Word and prayer, living **LIKE** Jesus as we learn to care for one another, and **FOR** Jesus as we live out the Christian mission of making disciples. Each week, you'll gather for a time of a Bible study discussion, prayer, fellowship (that's Christian for hanging out), and refreshment in The Lord. Most of us run on caffeine, and those of us that don't still like free stuff. But coffee isn't just fuel, it's a medium for people connecting – so we thought, *why not offer a free cup of coffee and a smile to the campus each week?*  We gather on the Main Quad outside of the Illini Union on Fridays from 10am-12pm. Our offerings include ethically sourced, high quality coffee, because free doesn't have to be bad. We also serve a seasonal offering that's not caffeinated alongside it. Think lemonade when it's hot and cocoa when there's a chill in the air. Other than free coffee, our tent is also an easy and low-pressure way to meet us as a ministry. We'd love for you to stop by, *say hi*, and connect with one of our students to learn more about I-Life. *We might even write your name on the cup...* Check out our map below, and we'll be looking forward to meeting you on the quad! I had updated Alan Hable a few years ago on the information regarding our coffee.  We are no longer partnering with Jorge Serrano and the coffee we currently use for wholesale is a Guatemala Huehuetenango.  We have been working with an importer on Guatemala coffee for the past 15 years—Kapeh Utz is the name of the importer ([kapeh-utz.com](http://kapeh-utz.com/) is their website if you’d like to get further information about them). We’ve always loved that their mission is to work with small producers.  Martina Bernardo de Martin and her husband Juan Jose are indigenous Mayan coffee producers who speak Mam. Martina is in charge of their family coffee fields and wet mill processing, while Jose coordinates the business. Their coffee is cultivated in the Sierra de Los Cuchumatanes mountains of Huehuetenango, approximately 3 hours north of the city of Huehuetenango. The coffee undergoes wet processing at a site amongst the coffee fields before being dried in the sun at their at home artisan wet mill. Processing in the remote area of Rio Ocho brings out fruity flavors and less acidic characteristics similar to that of a natural processed coffee. Kapeh Utz has worked with the Martin family since the start of our business! **Varieties:** Caturra, Red Pache, and Bourbon **Grade:** Strictly hard bean (SHB), 1900 - 2000 meters **Preparation:** Fully washed. Sun dried on concrete patios and black nylon **Certifications:** Organically farmed, but not certified organic. Direct trade **Cup Characteristics:** Sugarcane, honey, chocolate, sweet orange citrus acidity, red wine Our roaster is The Friendly Bean in Kansas City, MO. The Friendly Bean is a small community coffee shop in Kansas City that offers fresh roasted coffees which they roast at our own roasterie. John, the owner there roasts the beans fresh for Illini Life when we order them. The Friendly Bean has a commitment to donate at least 50% of the profits from sales back to Honduras to support Casa Hogar Vida. As well, they have worked to train the roaster in Honduras to bring out the best qualities of these beans. Then, when Illini Life orders our beans, John ships them to us and we brew them fresh in our office on campus every week. Simply put the more cups of free coffee we give out, the more students on our campus we bless AND the more help we offer to those in need in Honduras. (Matthew 28:18-20) We want all Illinois students to have the opportunity to explore and live life with Jesus Christ at the center. (Colossians 1:28-29) We're an inter-denominational ministry that sees students from many different backgrounds join us each year. We believe there's room within Christianity for different preferences, but here are the key truths that we stand on. The sole basis of our beliefs is the Bible, the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. It was uniquely, verbally, and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit and was written without error in the original manuscripts. It is the supreme and final authority in faith and life in every age. There is but one God, infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness and love. He is the Creator of the universe, eternally existing in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - each of whom possesses all the attributes of Deity and the characteristics of personality. God created man in His own image, and man, as he was originally created, was innocent before God. But man chose to sin by disobeying God, and therefore was alienated from his Creator and came under divine condemnation. Thus all human beings are born with a corrupted nature and without spiritual life, and are totally incapable of pleasing God in and of themselves. God the Father, by His own choice and out of love for sinful men and women, sent Jesus Christ into the world to reconcile sinners to Himself. Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. He is God in the flesh, both true God and true man. Jesus Christ lived a sinless life and voluntarily suffered and died as our substitute to pay the penalty for our sins, thus satisfying God’s justice and accomplishing salvation for all who trust in Him alone. He rose from the dead in the same body, though glorified, in which He lived and died. He bodily ascended into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father, where He, the only mediator between God and man, makes intercession for His own. He will return to earth personally, visibly and bodily to judge all men and establish His kingdom. Men and women are freed from the penalty for their sins not as a result, in whole or in part, of their own works, goodness or religious ceremony, but by the undeserved favor of God alone. God declares righteous all who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation. The Holy Spirit has come into the world to reveal and glorify Christ, to convict men and women of their sins, and to impart new life to all who place their faith in Christ. He indwells believers from the moment of spiritual birth, seals them until the day of redemption, allots spiritual gifts to them for ministry, and empowers them to live a life pleasing to God. All who are born again of the Spirit can, through the sure promises of God, be fully assured of eternal life from the very moment they put their faith in Christ. This assurance is not based upon any kind of human merit but upon the finished work of Christ - who completely paid for their sins - and upon the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, who is the deposit guaranteeing their inheritance. At physical death, the believer enters immediately into eternal, conscious fellowship with the Lord and awaits the resurrection of his or her body to everlasting glory and blessing. At physical death, the unbeliever enters immediately into eternal, conscious separation from the Lord and awaits the resurrection of his or her body to everlasting suffering, judgment and condemnation. Jesus Christ has instructed those who believe in Him to be baptized in water as a symbol of their new birth in Christ. Baptism is only for those who have personally believed in Christ. Our practice is to baptize by immersion. The Lord also instituted the Lord’s Supper as a remembrance of His suffering, death and resurrection. Neither baptism nor the Lord’s Supper has any merit in helping a person obtain eternal life. Each member of our staff has raised a support team through [Reliant Mission](https://reliant.org/). Reliant's mission is to help fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus Christ by mobilizing and resourcing missionaries in their local churches for the purpose of evangelism, discipleship and church planting. Reliant makes the work of I-Life happen. We firmly believe the work of the Church is the responsibility of each believer; the staff simply facilitate the ministry we all do as a part of Illini Life. If you'd like to give to Reliant on behalf of one of our staff, please click their individual photo in the list below. Nick used to work as a network engineer for the University before joining the staff team. He's been on the staff for a while now, and on campus even longer. His roles include pastoring, teaching, IT management, and discipling young leaders. Nick loves to run, bike, and swim – usually all in a row, for insane amounts of time. Rylee studied History and Secondary Education at the U of I. She interned with us as a student and joined staff in 2022 after graduating. Her roles include overseeing our outreach efforts and discipling students. She loves reading, crafting, hanging out with her husband, and talking about Jesus over a good matcha. Michael graduated with a degree in financial planning from the U of I. He interned for two years while earning his degree before coming on staff full-time. He oversees the church small groups, manages finances for the church, and disciples students as they learn to walk with Christ in all they do. He loves to run workshops on today's hot topics, nerd out about the bible, and go for long walks in nature to enjoy God's beautiful creation.  Peter studied Music Education at Kent State University and has been a part of the Collegiate Church Network since his undergrad. He is on the worship team and disciples young men. Peter and Suzanne are happy newlyweds. He loves playing his saxophone (or any other instrument he can get his hands on), disc golf, & tacos. David pursued graduate work in communication and media at UIUC before returning to Champaign-Urbana with his wife Sarah and their son Judah to serve at Illini Life. He serves as a coach for the Sunday Crews and one of the directors of the musical worship ministry, and can reliably be found within 50 feet of any gathering that includes coffee. David loves movies, games, golf, and philosophical discussions about whatever device you’re reading this on. Tyler is a senior studying accountancy and finance at the U of I. He is interning with us this school year and he is co-leading a couple of groups and discipling other male students. He loves hiking, bowling and for whatever reason, reading classical books  Suzanne has a degree in Integrative Biology from the U of I. After graduating, she completed a summer internship with us, and from there she joined the staff team. Her roles include discipling young women and caring for the tiny humans in the church. They set direction, and create policy, as well as watch over our doctrine, and finances. Each elder has demonstrated the character of service, humility, teachability, love, care, and concerns for others. Additionally, each has demonstrated sound doctrine and theological training enabling them to teach, train and admonish others. Lastly, each has been put before the congregation for consideration and approved. Kyle joined Illini Life as a student in the fall of 2003. After graduation he married and he and his wife have four amazing children. He is a professional geek writing computer programs working remotely for various Bay Area tech companies. Within Illini Life he serves leading the Grad Small Group and volunteers as an Elder. Nick serves Illini Life full time as a pastor and offers his experience in day-to-day ministry to the Elder Board for consideration in decisions and direction. He is seminary trained and enjoys studying scripture and sharing it with others. J.D. has served Illini Life in various support roles since coming to the U of I in 1992 to study CS Engineering. This 2 night, 3 day time away is a chance to grow closer to community and to grow deeper with God. The time spent at the Fall Retreat is an opportunity to take a break from the semester, to grow with God, and to be knit into community We will have food, fun & friends! And, we will dive into God's Word through teachings, personal time with Jesus, and conversations. This is a great time to get off campus and retreat with one another at a local camp. Fall Retreat is where deep relational roots are made that flow back onto campus. It helps create deeper community that lasts all school year and beyond! This year we will be joining together with [Cornerstone Church](http://cornerstoneisu.org/) from Illinois State University for our retreat. Sadly this means despite our desire to love Jesus and be His bride, we fail to do that well at times. When those failures come from the error, sin, or wrongdoing of leadership it leaves a wake of wounds in the church. It is our desire to live as the people of God, shining light on sin, living in repentance, and clinging to grace. As a result we are committed to living transparently before others involving misconduct of any kind that happens in our midst when it involves church leadership. Below you will find the official statements regarding the investigation into the leadership of Illini Life, specifically regarding former pastor Wayne Wager, that was conducted in the Fall of 2019. The findings of the third party investigation resulted in the removal of Wayne as a pastor and staff member in Illini Life, and the discipline of 3 staff members for instances of failures in their leadership. The entire remaining Illini Life Staff Team has undergone training in identifying and understanding sexual harassment and responding to abuse allegations since the investigation was completed. Annual training on these topics are now mandatory for all missionaries with Reliant Mission (our missions agency). Additionally, those remaining staff members that were disciplined for their leadership failures have continued to cooperate, comply, and repent of their wrong doing. We know there are so many Kingdom organizations and opportunities available to you and we want to share as many as we can over your time here at Illinois. A short term missions trip over Spring Break gives you the opportunity to see and encounter God's people doing work in different places than our own. We'd love for you to contribute to justice work in our world, learn about places to serve and participate in Kingdom ministry, and develop deeper bonds with others from Illini Life on the trip. We'll take a road trip to Memphis, Tennessee over Spring Break, where SOS (learn about them below) will host us, feed us, and put us to work on their home restoration projects in the city. You'll work on homes during the day, learn about how God feels about the poor, and how you can help in hard situations like these. In the evenings, there will be opportunities to be exposed to different perspectives on how Christians can engage in communities like the ones SOS serves. *We'll return in time on Friday for you to visit with family or catch up on homework over the weekend.* No, it's not actually that affordable. We know there are real financial burdens on you as a student, so we are inviting you to participate in financial support raising to cover the rest of your trip cost. We'll train and coach you. We've found this to be an incredible experience &  we see people that want to help every year. *If you choose not to raise support, there is an additional $350 trip fee.* We'll organize a road trip both there and back. If your vehicle is used, you'll be compensated for wear and tear.  We'll send a packing list, but know you'll be wearing work clothes during the day and we'll have a few social opportunities in the evenings. You'll also need to bring bedding for the bunks at SOS. SOS will also provide the equipment necessary to do the work on the job sites. Service Over Self (SOS) is a non-profit Christian organization based in Memphis, Tennessee. It was started in 1986  as a means to meet the needs of some of the city’s most vulnerable homeowners and they have repaired more than 1,000 homes in Memphis utilizing more than 25,000 volunteers (many are college students on Spring Break projects). Their strategy involves focusing on specific neighborhoods and partnering with homeowners and organizations in those communities. We currently serve the Memphis neighborhoods of Binghampton, The Heights, and Orange Mound. Through partnerships with other organizations and residents within the communities they serve, SOS is playing a vital role in the holistic Christian community development of these neighborhoods. All of their work is done with the gospel at the heart of their motivation. Jesus came to reconcile all things to himself (Colossians 1:20). That is, he came to set right all that has been broken by sin. Today, because of sin, we do not fully experience the Shalom with which God created the world.
